15 minutes with… British fashion designer Olivia Rubin

Push is all about championing brilliant collaborations and this month we had the pleasure of attending triplemelt’s debut #fashionbeautybooks event celebrating Olivia Rubin’s new Rainbow collection.

“The triplemelt ladies embody what my brand is all about – fun loving, friendly and a little bit fiesty,” Olivia told us.

“I met Ashling for coffee and we immediately hit it off. We discussed how events really work and the way they allow us to meet new people, connect with creatives and put faces to many Instagram followers so it made sense for us to join forces!

“We wanted to do something with a colourful and unique theme so tying in my new Rainbow capsule collection was the perfect fit.”

For those who don’t know, triplemelt is a lifestyle website (fashion, beauty, books, travel…!) run by three super-driven women; author and journalist Ali Harris, editor and style writer Ashling McCloy and beauty PR Robyn Upton. Sign up for the newsletter if real, relatable content is your thing.

“I love the boldness of the yellow Isabel Frill Midi Dress from Olivia’s Rainbow collection, and the boho feel of the white Ozzie Maxi Dress – both of which look incredible with lace-up sandals and a simple basket bag,” Ashling told us.

This was seconded by Ali when we asked her to pick just one piece from the collection. “Definitely the Ozzie Maxi Dress! I was lucky enough to wear it for our launch and it now feels like THE ONLY dress I’ll ever need in my wardrobe. I felt amazing in it, it’s so easy to wear, flattering and versatile.”

“For me it’s the Sonia Shirt Dress in pale blue and pink – the perfect summer ‘does everything’ dress,” said Robyn. “I’d style it with a killer pair of heels (maybe Sophia Websters, my fav) and then surprise my hubby after work with a swish supper followed by a night out on the town.”

After swooning over the collection we took 15 minutes out with Olivia to talk inspiration, business and hear what she had to offer up in terms of style advice.

RUBIN RAIL

Talk us through the new Rainbow collection and what inspired it?
I have always loved rainbow colours and the all encompassing love that they symbolise. I wanted to apply this to a fashion print so I came up with the micro rainbow print on a range of mini shapes. Using a black background makes the colours really pop and adds a more wearable element. The collection includes an easy to wear silk shirt, shirt dress and a more eclectic silk dupion co-ord. And then there are the matching phone cases!

How important is the ‘Designed and made in London’ element of your business?
London has always been my home for work and family. It is important that my label reflects a London style and is authentic to me.

You have previously worked with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Dior and John Galliano in Paris; what key things did you take away from this experience/ exposure?
They were invaluable to my growth as a designer and for learning the mechanics of a fashion business. At Galliano I really honed my strength which was print and surface design and applied that to my label when I started up.

Who would you love to collaborate with?
I’ve done so many great collaborations over the years in and out of the fashion world (from Dorothy Perkins to Dove) – the next step for me would be to have a ‘mini me’ range and partner with a kids label, that would be fab.

Favourite piece from the collection and why? And, how do you wear it?
The Ozzie is a personal favourite. I designed it as I was struggling to finding something for a friend’s wedding; I wanted a dress that was unique, easy to wear, floaty and colourful.

Who is the collection for?
I love seeing all kinds of different women wearing my clothes – but a woman who enjoys fashion and doesn’t take herself too seriously. Clothes are meant to make women feel fab about themselves and I still smile when I see somebody wearing one of my pieces and the way they have styled it.

What colour should a woman never wear?
I don’t think there is a colour. I think it’s more about finding the right shade to suit both your style and complexion. There is a colour for everybody!

This summer you’ll be…?
Working on my new collection, planning events and enjoying the sun with my family.

If you weren’t a fashion designer…?
I can’t imagine do anything out of the fashion or art world – so perhaps a painter?!

Is fashion empowering? How do you want to make women feel when they put on your pieces?
Definitely! Putting on the right dress can give such confidence. I often dress for my mood. I try to make women feel strong and independent so that they can take on the world.

Last account you followed on Instagram and why?
@Stylememos because it’s beautifully edited and I love the artistic element in the feed, @huesofwhite is also a must follow as it’s a truly talented digital content creative.

Soundtrack to the Rainbow collection would include…?
Love on Top by Beyoncé and Happy by Pharrell.
